Dr. Richard J. Thomas

UKRRIN Industrial Fellow in Data Integration and Cyber Security
Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education

Dr Richard Thomas MBCS is an Industrial Fellow at the University of Birmingham, with his research focusing on railway supply chain cyber security, in particular, how products can be assured to meet the requirements of the EU Network and Information Systems Directive. A member of the Research Institute for Trustworthy Inter-connected Cyberphysical Systems (RITICS) since 2015, he carried out research into the cyber security of ERTMS train to wayside communications, proposing solutions to meet the future needs of railway signalling, including a post-quantum secure solution for key management. He has been credited with the discovery of 5 critical vulnerabilities in Industrial Control Systems, has featured on Siemens' Hall of Thanks for his work in vulnerability discovery and disclosure and has contributed to the development of secure standards for the railway.
