Nicola Furness is Network Rail’s Engineering Expert (Europe CCS). Nicola has extensive experience in Control, Command and Signalling activities, specialising in ERTMS. She leads Network Rail’s input into European forums on ERTMS and into CCS Research and Development(R&D) Programmes such as Shift2Rail. She is the Technical Lead for Network Rail’s T190plus R&D programme.

Nicola has played a leading role in the development and deployment of ERTMS in GB. This has involved both supporting current ERTMS deployment schemes and leading demonstrators of new ETCS related developments such as ETCS Hybrid Level 3, Moving Block and Automatic Train Operation on Network Rail infrastructure. Her involvement in ERTMS began with leading the implementation and commissioning of ERTMS on Cambrian, the first GB ERTMS scheme.

Nicola is a Chartered Engineer, a Member of the Institution of Engineering Technology and a Member of the Institution of Railway Signal Engineers.
