Paul Welford is Major Projects Director at Nexus who is the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport executive responsible for Metro, Bus and Ferry operations. Paul is accountable for reliable delivery of a broad range of projects on behalf of Nexus and the wider region including infrastructure renewals and enhancements, integrated smart ticketing programmes, new fleet introduction, business change/ICT and significant development schemes. These projects span across rail, bus and ferry infrastructure and operations as part of the Nexus commitment to connect communities and support growth across the North East through a reliable and continually improving multimodal transport network.

Pauls experience pre-Nexus has largely centred around large rail infrastructure project design and implementation including with Network Rail in national engineering strategy and delivery roles and in leadership roles with major consultancies in the rail market, particularly in the North. With a grounding as an electrical engineering professional in the Steel industry, Paul’s career has also included leading engineering businesses outside of the rail environment, delivering diverse services to clients in multiple sectors and across the world.
