Karl joined RIA in 2020 as the Technical & Innovation Manager. His role focuses on representing member's interests in the important areas of safety, technical standards, technical strategy, research and innovation.

Karl is a chartered engineer of the Institution of Engineering & Technology and a certified systems engineering professional of the International Council of Systems Engineers with nearly 20 years rail industry experience. Prior to joining RIA spent nearly 10 years in railway consulting including heading the Train Control Systems team for Mott MacDonald. His earlier career includes lead System roles on the Cambrian ERTMS Early Deployment Scheme and leading product acceptance for modern computer based interlockings as well as being Lead Systems Engineer for the CBTC supplier on the Victoria Line Upgrade programme. As a Systems Engineer he has been responsible for the specification, development and safety assurance of complex command, control, signalling, electrification and rolling stock programmes.
