Stuart is a traction and rolling stock engineer with over thirty years of experience in a number of roles including specialist engineering, project engineering, project management and line management. He spent nine years working on the design, construction and introduction of new trains for Adtranz and its predecessors BREL and ABB, which included being involved in the development of the Turbostar DMU and Electrostar EMU products. In 2000 he joined Halcrow, later renamed CH2M and now Jacobs, working on projects on new trains, upgrades of existing vehicles and independent safety reviews and certification. He is now the Head of Rolling Stock for Jacobs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, having responsibility for the management of resources, quality and technical development for 25 traction and rolling stock consultants.

He is a Chartered Engineer and has a BSc in Physics from the University of Durham and an MSc (Eng) Rail Systems Engineering from the University of Sheffield.
