Chris Hatter

Head of Compliance
Portsmouth International Port

Portsmouth International Port is Britain’s biggest municipal port. Being owner by the people of Portsmouth, we take our Environmental, Social and Governance responsibilities seriously. As Head of Compliance, Chris ensures that we’re doing what we say we will and leads on our 5 ISO certifications, risk and opportunity profiling and a wide range of community and industry engagement.

Chris has worked in the port and shipping sector for nearly 20 years; starting as a Graduate Management Trainee with ABP. Further career moves saw spells with shipowner Gearbulk; miner and commodity trader, Peabody; distressed cargo trader, Cargo Recovery Consultants; tanker broker, Wake Marine.

During this time Chris has completed a Masters in Maritime Law, the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers PQE alongside quality, auditing, information security, safety and industry specific courses. This background and maritime enthusiasm means that Chris is unlikely to be far from any opportunities to encourage others, particularly younger audiences, to join the industry.

In his spare time Chris is also a local district councillor in East Hampshire whilst trying to raise his family and watch Pompey climb back up the leagues.
